Five for the Weekend
A brief weekly send-off with some things that are good.
- Jane Austen Wrecked My Life (Jane Austen a Gâché Ma Vie): A very French movie about a woman who loves Jane Austen, it's got dry humor (again, French), believable complications, and a grouchy heroine. So, my kind of romantic comedy.
- After the Funeral. Having first climbed aboard the Tessa Hadley train with her 2024 novella The Party, I'm now thoroughly engrossed in her 2023 short story collection (thanks, Michele!).
- Baking With Dorie's caramel apple crisp. Let us now sing the praises of homely desserts and the reliable genius of Dorie Greenspan.
- In the Dark: Blood Relatives. I burned out on Serial-style podcasts about a decade ago, and yet I can't get enough of this one, a whodunit about the White House Farm murders, a family massacre that shook Britain in the 1980s.
- I'm never not in a Coney Island Baby state of mind.
