Hi. My name is Rebecca Flint Marx and this is my newsletter-slash-weird creative project to offload what's happening in my brain. Contrary to my newsletter's name, I am not actually experiencing a lack of spirit, enthusiasm, or interest (per Britannica's definition of ennui), unless I'm reading the news. But ennui does sum up my experience of having been unceremoniously laid off at a certain point in my life and career, and then taking a step back to look around and thinking, really, this is what it all comes to? To paraphrase an Ali Wong joke, it doesn't make me want to lean in; it makes me want to lie down. Also, when I was looking for a name for this newsletter, I wanted a spin on The Marx-Engels Reader, and ennui fit the bill.

I've been a journalist, writer, and editor for the entirety of my adult life, and a New Yorker for the majority of it. You can find a lot of my work here.
